Ivana Kafedjiyska - Bittersweet

Bittersweet is a song I wrote and recorded about how beautiful friendships are and how they can crumble through the abuse of drugs and alcohol. It changes people. Originally an acoustic song, I added the drums to show my frustration. The viola that comes in the second verse represents all that you wanna say but can't because it will only push them away. My entry, put simply, is about intervention. Hope you enjoy it.

Fushia - Nocturnal

Nocturnal is about getting out and making the most of a good night with the friends you have. It was inspired after I watched a friend of mine turn to drugs for a new fun of life but it only led to the complete opposite. It features a vintage spinning-speaker church organ in the intro and a soprano guitar (something I never knew existed!) backing the lead guitar riff. These were really fun to record because we didn't know what we were doing and had to work it out.

Steven Grace - Headspace

Steven Grace's Headspace image

This design represents me. Life is sometimes very disjointed and gets shifted unexpectedly. Some things are very bland and black & white, but there are some things in life which are full of colour. I choose to focus on these, just as these are the focal points of my design. I also try and to gain a higher perspective on situations around me, represented through the mountains.

Amy Blue - Expiry

In this work I am reflecting on the "expiry" of my own youth. This will be the last year I can enter this competition and it led me to think of youthfulness and what it means. Being a kid for me was all about textas, jolly ranchers & playing shop. It's a headspace of play & exploration that anyone can tap into. It is something I tap into everyday as an artist. For me youth is the state of being not about the digits on your birth certificate.

Emma Driml - Best Friend

I normally don't draw inspiration from anywhere in particular when I write stories, however I saw a real story on about a dog saving another dog after it was hit by a car in Chile. Animals, not only dogs, can be our best friends - and just their presence can help us through hard times. This story is about a girl called Melanie. The stray dog helps her literally by saving her after being hit by a car, but also by being there for her when no one else was.

Raelke Grimmer - Twisted

"Twisted" is the story of a young couple, starting a life for themselves. When a friend intervenes for what she believes is the right reason, the couple comes to realise that not everything is black and white. My characters are deliberately unnamed so the names don't disrupt the story and I chose to integrate my dialogue into the text as opposed to using speech marks. This ensures the story flows to the end and the reader is caught up in the lives of the characters and the dilemma of the friend, whose intent is good but not necessarily right.

Braden Trotter - Come On Australia

View Braden Trotter's Come On Australia on YouTube

This entry is a short monologue that raises numerous valid reasons why young people should pay taxes. The main character Elliot Hynes passionately calls for all young Australian's to 'do the right thing'. However the shot then zooms out to reveal that Elliot is a dole bludging surfer whose intentions are far less genuine.

Young Australians have to pay taxes by law, so just telling them what their taxes pay for wouldn't be affective. In order to get them interested (let alone excited) about doing taxes, you have to connect with the individual and make them laugh.

George Makrynakis - The Secret Piggybank

We heard about the competition at the start of April and were really excited about entering so we searched for actors and locations one week, shot and recorded sound over the weekend, then edited though till the last date of submission. Our concept revolves around the idea that superannuation serves as an extra piggybank on the side to secure our future. And while teens and young adults whine about it, most of us spend our money every day on things that we don’t need anyway, so the money that accumulates in the 'piggybank' will help us in the long run.

Jessica Fabri - Intuition

Jessica Fabri's Intuition entry

This photograph I took is of my own feet running over a missing persons poster (that I made up). This photograph is supposed to show someone who is franticly searching for someone who has gone missing. I named the photograph 'Intuition' because it shows that the missing person’s poster that the person is running over won’t help them find this person anymore and that they need to use their own intuition to find them. The ripple effect is displayed in this photo by the desperation of the searcher by the movement of their feet.
