Why did you get involved with NYW and why is it important to you?
I got involved in NYW after being the Projects Officer of the flagship event for NYW 2011 in WA and because I think it is a fantastic opportunity for young people which recognises not only their achievements but also their value in our society.
Why should young people get involved in NYW and how can they get involved?
Young people should get involved because NYW is all about events being made for young people, by young people. It is the one dedicated time on the Australian calendar each year which not only celebrates the contribution young people make, but gives them a national platform to have their voice heard. You can get involved by joining your state's NYW planning committee, youth advisory council or sub-committee who are organising activities and events for NYW.
What are you most looking forward to for NYW 2012?
I am most looking forward to the Youth Hub in Perth which will be the heart of NYW in WA running throughout the whole week and featuring everything from bands to workshops, pop-up stalls and nightly forums. If you live in Perth, drop by and check it out!
What's it like to be a Young Member?
It's great being the Young Member for WA, being able to represent my state on a national level and involved in every facet of the NYW celebrations. I've been able to chair the NYW planning committee as well as be involved in the planning of the national launch. This position has also given me the opportunity to sit on the judging panel for not only the grants for NYW in WA but also the Positive Image Award for secondary school students. It's enabled me to speak with other young people in metropolitan and regional WA and start planning for NYW 2013.
What's your hidden talent?
My hidden talent would be making paper cranes. I quite enjoy origami-the beautiful paper you can get and the shapes that you can make through simple folds. I can make a few animals but cranes remain my favourite because they are elegant and quite easy to teach other people how to make. I've probably made close to five hundred paper cranes since I first began.
If you could, which NTC competition would you enter and why?
I'd enter the ShootIT competition because I studied film and screen at university and I like process of developing an idea for screen; working out what the audience needs to be shown to understand the message, how lighting affects the perception of the subject, how music affects the mood and the struggle to decide when exactly to cut the shot so the final product is seamless.
If you were an animal, which would you be and why?
If I was an animal I'd most likely be a meerkat. I am always alert, watching what's going on around me and I'm quite a sociable person.
If you had only $10 left, what would you spend it on and why?
A second hand book because with $10 I wouldn't be able to afford a new one and after I read it I'd be able to resell it.
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know?
When I studied abroad in America I had a college radio show called Alice and the Antipodeans where I'd play the latest antipodean music and give updates about cultural activities happening around Australia.
How can the Youth of today be (more) active in their communities?
There are so many ways young people can be active in their communities from joining their local youth advisory council to other youth groups and organisation, even starting up their own community committee! I would encourage young people to approach their local council with ideas and then perhaps apply for community grants to fund initiatives.
