About National Youth Week

National Youth Week (NYW) 2012 is on from Friday 13 April to Sunday 22 April 2012, with events running all over the country. The 2012 theme is Imagine. Create. Inspire. NYW is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. Thousands of young people aged 12–25 from across Australia get involved in NYW each year. NYW is an opportunity for young people to:

  • share ideas
  • attend live events
  • have their voices heard on issues of concern to them
  • showcase their talents
  • celebrate their contribution to the community
  • take part in competitions
  • have fun!

Who is involved?

Young people from all over the country take part in the celebrations along with many high schools, universities and TAFEs. A huge range of organisations also get involved in NYW, including community and youth groups, sponsors, businesses, and Australian, state, territory and local governments.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways you can get involved in NYW 2012.

Who runs NYW?

NYW is a joint Australian Government, state, territory and local government initiative. The Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, in collaboration with the departments responsible for youth affairs in each state and territory, coordinate NYW with the help of a group of fantastic young people.

NYW 2011 in review

Own It! was the NYW 2011 theme, which saw young Australians owning National Youth Week all over Australia. The national launch event was held in Melbourne at Birrarung Marr, with young people rocking out to Jebediah, The Vines and Tim and Jean. Around 190 000 young people participated in over 1 700 events across Australia. Hundreds of young people showed their talents in the National Talent Competition (RockIT, WriteIT, SnapIT, ShootIT and DesignIT) and shared their thoughts on being a young person via the Win Free Stuff competition. You can check out highlights on the NYW 2011 page.
