Imparja
Imparja Television, founded in 1988, is unique as it is Australia’s last independent television station, is proudly 100% Aboriginal owned.
As well as indigenous and locally produced programs, including local news updates and children’s show “Yamba’s Playtime”, Imparja purchases its programming from the Nine Network enabling a lively and varied programming schedule.
Imparja is a free-to-air television broadcaster, with a broadcast area over 3.6 million square kilometres, spanning 5 states and territories – NT, SA, QLD, NSW and VIC with 430,000 resident viewers and our service is also watched by up to 6million tourists who visit Outback Australia each year.
In addition, Imparja provides its second satellite service – Channel 31 to ICTV (Indigenous Community TV). Imparja helped develop this service which is utilised by the wider Indigenous community to transmit and promote Indigenous programming that would otherwise not be available.
Intensive planning is underway for the legislative changes for digital broadcasting in remote and regional areas of Australia. Imparja’s purpose built digital broadcast facility, the first of its kind was completed in Alice Springs, in mid 2008.
Imparja plays an important role for its broadcast area, by providing information and communication services and well as funds and support for charities and community events.
Imparja is looking forward to a positive future with growth and opportunities. It remains a blueprint for Aboriginal self-determination.
