Australian Capital Territory – A Message from Joy Burch MLA

Joy Burch MLA

“It is a great pleasure for me, as the Minister for Children and Young People, to launch National Youth Week in the ACT. This is a significant event in the community calendar as it adds to important Government initiatives to enhance the inclusive nature of our Canberra Community.

Within the ACT it is clear to me that young people are genuinely interested in being involved in their community, in having their say and making sure it counts.

Recently I was very proud to launch the Young People’s Plan 2009-2014 which was developed in consultation with young people in our community.

As a result of this active involvement with youths, we now have a plan that will help address their issues, acknowledge what they value and will respond to their needs through to 2014.

National Youth Week is a real expression of youth culture – in its many forms. It is a celebration and a reminder to the wider community that young people have a unique role to play. This week brings a perfect opportunity to start something new, to be recognised, to contribute, to be inspired – and importantly – to truly enjoy being young.

May the ACT’s celebration of National Youth Week 2010 in the ACT be a fun time for learning, for growing – and for fun. Enjoy it all!”
