Rain

Congao (Oliver) Ma

I have always thought that being yourself is being beautiful. I’m sure that at some point in everyone’s life, the concept of “dare to be different” seems to stick out like a sore thumb when you realise that perhaps you’re a bit too ordinary. When I was little, I thought about what it’s like to be really “cool”, really unique. One of them was “wouldn’t it be cool if you can just listen to music while walking in the rain!” and this became the idea for this design. The drawing took me three hours to complete and I have decided to stick to a monochromatic colour scheme. Now let’s just hope the mp3 player doesn’t short-circuit in the rain!

Be Beautiful Be Yourself

One of my strongest beliefs is that the truth must always prevail and that, without expressing your true self, happiness and beauty is impossible. This design has (hopefully!) represents the way in which I personally believe that by being true to yourself, you will be happy and your inner beauty will shine.

Turning Beauty Inside Out

Too many late night creative ‘I have to do this right now even though it‘s 2am’ ideas and hardcore clipping mask action sees the final product of Turning Beauty Inside Out. Largely inspired by designer Alberto Seveso, I have created a piece which represents the beauty inside of you and the way to show it is to be yourself. Everybody has different personalities built upon layers of emotion and this is shown with the complex shapes and layers. Ironically the original picture is of myself; one of the ways I can be unique is to show myself through my art.

Basically my piece is a fun, random and extremely extravagant doodle that turned into a poster using my ‘wing it’ method, the only plan I had in mind was lots of detail ha ha. It isn’t intended to have any great or deep meaning, it is meant to be about having fun, being yourself, and enjoying what you love, relating to the theme of course! Everything is hand drawn (Every single swirl!) using my Wacom tablet and Adobe CS4. I used reference by taking pictures of things I have and things my friends have. That’s it really. Hope you dig!

Putting the Pieces Together

I have designed many pieces on this theme and I have come up with this. My DesignIT piece shows the theme “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” by the scrabble pieces showing the way you can put the pieces together, to make different words, which also can be the way you can make different people (like DNA). This reflects that everyone can be unique by “Putting the Pieces Together”. In the background you can see the back of a girl in the city where everyone is the same, but it shows you can stand out.
